YORK-The Coleman Center for Arts and Culture has announced the opening of the “Alabama Road Series” by Paula Frances Peek. Peek’s work will be on display from Aug. 23 through Sept. 28 with an opening reception to be held in the Altman-Riddick Museum Aug. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Peek, who is an Assistant Professor at Auburn University, says her art presents a stretch of highway many in Alabama have become familiar with through the years. She said many different memories went into her work.

“Documenting a specific section of Highway 280 between Waverly and Auburn, the Alabama roads series focuses on memory, both collective and individual,” Peek said. “The series presents common roadside visages that could be assigned to many rural thoroughfares, similar through specific yet common visual experiences.”

Coleman Center Director Shana Berger said the Center is very excited to have Peek’s work on display and they have enjoyed their dealings with her.

“She is really nice,” Berger said. “We are very excited to have her work in the Coleman Center and look forward to Friday.”

Peek, who is originally from North Carolina, lives in Waverly where she and her husband operate the Deluxe Printing Company. Peek is an Assistant Professor of Art at Auburn University where she specializes in interior design.

As an artist, she has had work displayed in galleries and shows from the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta, Ga. to the Mostra del Lavori in Corso in Cortona, Italy.

On the Auburn University website Peek described her artistic interests vary.

“As an artist and teacher the ideas and concepts most pertinent would include space manipulation through color and texture,” Peek said. “The concept of space manipulation would not be limited to a canvas or three dimensional environments, but the realization of intangible space in visual form.”

Peek has earned much praise throughout her career, especially for her “Alabama Roads Series.” Peek was Best of Show at the 2004 Design Educators’ National Exhibition.
