GREENSBORO – The Hale County Grand Jury impaneled this week by Circuit Judge Tommy Jones didn’t return an indictment against Randy Adams, a Pleasant Valley store owner who shot at four individuals he said were trying to break into his store.

“The grand jury considered the case against Randy Adams and he was not indicted,” said Assistant District Attorney Vangi Rose.

Adams, owner of the Pleasant Valley Grocery, shot and injured two of three people who were allegedly trying to break into his store Aug. 9 on Alabama Highway 25, according to police reports.

The incident, written up as criminal mischief and reported to the sheriff’s department by Adams, damaged one window valued at $125, a door valued at $345 and a lock valued at $45.

District Attorney Ed Greene, currently out of the country on vacation, said earlier he believed the there was a fine line between defending one’s property and criminal charges.

“The grand jury can look at the facts and make a determination,” he said, not ruling out the possibility that criminal charges could have been filed against Adams.

The grand jury met Monday and Tuesday, considering 13 cases and hearing from 18 witnesses. Six indictments were issued, the jury no-billed four cases, continued two cases and referred one case to juvenile court.

“They did not consider bonds or the jail,” Rose said.

The grand jury will next meet near the end of September, she said.
