After being postponed for severe weather, Sav-A-Life held its Walk/Run 4 Life 10K on Jan. 28. Winners in the different age groups of the event are, from left, Lauren Boone, Beth Mason, Monica Cox, Barrown Lankster, and Randy Fowler.

With a disappointing cancellation on Jan. 21 due to storms that swept the region, Sav-A-Life rescheduled its Walk/Run 4 Life Fundraiser. With a quick turnaround, the group planned another attempt for the following week, on Jan. 28. While some runners and walkers could not participate that following weekend, it was still a great turnout for the first event.
The center had 82 registrations, 52 participants, and ended up raising approximately $3,000 through the fundraising effort.
“God really carried this fundraiser. You have to know this is truly His ministry,” said Brooke Luker, Sav-A-Life center director.
According to event organizers, the event marked the first 10K in over 20 years in Demopolis. The race also included a 5K and family fun run.
“Sav-A-Life extends a huge thanks to Chief Reese and the police department for all their help. Some very special volunteers also made the event possible. Additionally, Sav-A-Life thanks local businesses for their support in sponsorships,” Luker said.
Sav-A-Life’s mission is to affirm the value of life by providing a network of care to those experiencing pregnancy-related crisis and by compassionately presenting biblical teachings.
“We exist to love on these women, their families, and babies,” Luker said. “We enjoy having the opportunity to get to share Christ’s love for them and the fact that He has a plan for their life. We do everything we can to prepare the family for the transition of new baby.”
According to Sav-A-Life representatives, the date of the 10K fundraiser was special to the center in order to celebrate the sanctity of life. January is the designated month for Sanctity of Life because of the January 22, 1973 decision to legalize abortion in the Roe vs. Wade case.
Sav-A-Life is open weekly Tuesdays through Thursdays from noon to 4 p.m. For more information about the organization, call 334-289-2273, email westalabamasavalife@gmail.com, or visit their website at westalsavalife.com.
