Driver feels more should have been done for injured animal

To the editor:

On May 13, 2017, I was traveling east on Hwy. 80 in the early morning hours, approximately 7:30 to 8 a.m. As I was driving over a bridge, there was a black dog by the guardrail and it looked up at me as I was driving. I know from experience it is not a good idea to approach a dog that may be injured, but it looked like somebody’s pet for sure.

I called 911 and explained to the operator that the dog appeared to be injured or may be chained for all I knew. She said she would get somebody to look into it. It was near a sign marked Hwy. 17. I drove back through there yesterday, June 16, and saw the dog at the same place, of course dead now.

It is a shame that public servants cannot take the time to do the right thing …. even if the dog had to be put down, it would have been better than it suffering for who knows how long.
