NWS: Snow possible as Winter Weather Advisory declared

UPDATE (Jan. 15, 2:43 p.m.): Demopolis City Schools officials said they are tracking weather conditions and will likely make an announcement regarding Tuesday’s class schedule at approximately 6 p.m. on Monday.

Residents of north and central Alabama may see more snow as the National Weather Service has declared a Winter Weather Advisory for those areas beginning Tuesday at 6 a.m. and continuing through Wednesday at 6 a.m.

According to the NWS, an arctic cold front will enter Northwest Alabama Tuesday morning and move southeastward across Central Alabama Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night. This front should have enough moisture and lift to generate a band of light to moderate snow,
which could potentially affect the forecast area.

“We will need to watch and see if a second band can develop across the
southern third of the area during the evening and provide a higher total down there as well. Though snowfall amounts are expected to remain less than 2 inches, impacts to travel could be significant due to temperatures falling into the 20s as the snow occurs,” stated a NWS press release.

Offiials said drivers should plan on slippery road conditions and reduced visibility, especially during the evening commute on Tuesday. Total snow accumulations of one quarter to one half inches are expected in most areas.

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow, means periods of snow will
cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered
roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.
