Demopolis lands new port facility on Tombigbee
Demopolis Mayor John Laney announced Thursday that Superior Inland Terminals, LLC has acquired a port site in Demopolis that was previously occupied by the Miller Lumber Company on the Tombigbee River.
Representatives of Superior Inland Terminals said the facility will be used as an intermodal logistic hub to service multiple “raw and processed” material markets throughout the Eastern United States.
The company closed on the property Thursday, which is located on the western side of Demopolis, next to the USA Ready Mix plant. While there is some construction work to do initially, the mayor said the company will be moving forward toward operation as quickly as possible.
During the early stages, the number of jobs being brought to the area may be minimal, but job growth is expected to increase as the company expects to add additional products.
Laney said this project is the result of a team effort of the Marengo County Economic Development Authority, Demopolis Industrial Development Board, The Alabama Department of Commerce, and Century 21/Patty Snell and Associates, plus many other supporting agencies.
“We are excited that Superior Inland Terminals selected Demopolis as the place to locate their port facility. We look forward to the economic development opportunities this will bring to the Black Belt,” Laney said.
