Demopolis elementary students name ‘Everyday Heroes’

Students at Westside Elementary School and U.S. Jones Elementary School celebrated the end of 12 weeks of learning about the importance of citizenship as the Liberty Learning Foundation hosted the finale of this year’s Super Citizens Program at both schools.

The program included the awarding of adult “Everyday Heroes,” which are selected by Torch Teams in each participating class at WES and USJ.

The program focuses on age-appropriate curriculum that helps students learn more about being productive and involved citizens. The program specifically teaches students civics, character, financial literacy and career lessons

The learning kicked off at WES and USJ with a visit from “Libby Liberty.”

It’s at that point the teachers go back into the classroom and discuss the “Super Citizens” program where the students learn about immigrants, veterans, symbols of the county, famous Americans and the great American story about where they come from, where they’re going and the important roles and responsibilities that they have by holding the most important title there is which is citizen according to Saunders

The finale see students representing each class present awards to the Everyday Heroes, including telling why that person was selected by their class.

At WES, Everyday Heroes selected were: Jason Windham, Sherron Brown, coach Ricky Richardson, Kirk Brooker, Joe Parr, Jennifer Roemen, DPD Sgt. Monica Oliver, DPD Sgt. Ronnie Clark, and school nurse Terri Cameron.

USJ students recognized the following: Latoya McGrew, Yahica Stewart, Dan and Vickie Wilson, Madison Williams, DPD Sgt. Monica Oliver, DCSF Executive Director Amanda Barnes, Diane Brooker, and Angela Schumacher.

This year’s Liberty Learning Foundation program was made possible by regional and local sponsors. Local sponsors include Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5377, Demopolis Rotary Club and the Demopolis City Council. Other sponsors are AlaTrade Foods, Alfa, ScreenTech, Alabama Bicentennial, The Malone Family Foundation, the Alabama Department of Education, the Daniel Foundation of Alabama, and International Paper.
