First-ever West Alabama Pro/Elite Combine set for June in Demopolis

The Demopolis Parks and Recreation Board and a team of local volunteers have come together to host the first-ever West Alabama Pro/Elite Combine (WAPEC) at the Demopolis Sportsplex June 27-29.

WAPEC is a football day camp open to high school students in Marengo County where various former and current NFL and collegiate football players will coach participants and raise their skill levels in the sport.

The mission statement of the executive committee behind the event is “WAPEC offers a competitive environment focusing on skill enhancement, character development, and exposure for current high school players.”

Sean Richardson, one of the day camp’s coaches and an executive committee member, said WAPEC will follow the NFL combine set-up, which includes performance measurements, skill testing and on-field workouts.

The day camp will give students the chance to see the on- and off-field techniques of professional football players. They will be coached for certain positions and learn how to examine game footage of themselves and other players.

WAPEC is also intended to give participants higher chances of advancing in their football careers.

“There’s a lot of talent around here,” Richardson said.

He also said WAPEC is planned to be an annual event, so participants can eventually benefit from up to four annual day camps.

“It’ll be our first year, but we want to have this every year.”

Application forms are due June 19 and are available through high school football coaches or via email through wapecombine@gmail.com. There is a participant cap of 100. Specific times will be announced at a later date.
