A 37-year-old pedestrian was hit and killed by a driver who fled the scene early Sunday morning near the Marengo-Wilcox county line.

The hit-and-run happened in Marengo County at the 60.1 mile-marker of Alabama 28, according to Alabama State Troopers.

Earnest Lee Pettway of the Alberta community in Wilcox County was hit by an unknown driver around 2:30 a.m.

Marengo County Sheriff Ben Bates said the incident remains under investigation to determine if Pettway was struck intentionally.

“We are not for sure (at this time),” Bates said.

An autopsy is set to be performed this week in Montgomery.

A sheriff’s deputy who had responded to an unrelated call in the area found Pettway lying in the road.
