Pine Hill man arrested after shooting, manhunt

A 21-year-old man was arrested Saturday after a shooting at Peachtree Apartments the previous night.

Pine Hill Police Department responded to a call of shots fired at the apartments. When the arrived, they found a 21-year-old man who was shot twice.

The victim, identified by authorities as Jamil Welch, was carried by Amstar Ambulance to Pine Hill Airport and then taken by Air Evac to the University of South Alabama trauma center in Mobile.

The alleged shooter, Ladarren Jones, ran from the scene. A “Be on the lookout” alert was put out for Jones as authorities continued to search for him.

Officers from Pine Hill, Wilcox County Sheriff’s Department, agent Larry Colston with the Fourth Judicial Drug Task Force and Sheriff Ray Norris of the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office helped with the search.

At approximately 2:30 the next afternoon, Jones turned himself in to Colston and Norris, who then transferred him to Pine Hill Police Chief John N. Brown and officer Josh Bufford.

Jones was charged with attempted murder, assault first degree, discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling, reckless endangerment and criminal trespassing third degree. He was booked into the Wilcox County Jail.

The condition of Welch is unknown at the time as of Tuesday.
