Johnson, Voyles named to UWG Invitational All-Tournament Team

CARROLLTON, Ga. – West Alabama women’s volleyball freshman Yanesha Johnson and junior Jessica Voyles were named to the West Georgia Invitational All-Tournament team on Sunday.

Johnson and Voyles both led West Alabama (3-1) back from a disappointing loss in its first match of the season to a three game win streak over Georgia College, King University and Notre Dame College.

“We are very proud of Yanesha and Jessica and what they’ve been able to accomplish on the court already this season,” said UWA head volleyball coach Jordan Lay. “This honor is well deserved by them. It is just another step for us as a team on the road to the ring.”

Johnson led the Tiger attack in kills in three of the four tournament matches to total 50 kills (3.12 per set) in the tournament. She played a major roll on defense as well leading her team with three solo blocks and 10 assists. Her best performance came in a 3-2 victory over King University where she posted 18 kills and 10 digs.

Voyles, a fellow newcomer also established her place on the Tiger offensive with 23 total kills (2.30 per set). She led the team with 14 kills in the squad’s first victory of the season against Georgia College.

Johnson, Voyles and the Tigers will return to action on Thursday as they travel to take on the University of Arkansas-Monticello in the Arkansas-Monticello Tournament. The first match is set for 7 p.m.
