The University of West Alabama football team finished at No. 24 in the final 2013 D2Football.com Top 25 poll, which was released by the publication Monday.
The Tigers finished the season with an 8-3 record and shared the Gulf South Conference championship with North Alabama. The conference crown marked the first time in program history that UWA has won back-to-back GSC titles.
West Alabama led the conference last season in scoring offense, total offense, total defense, rushing offense, rushing defense, pass efficiency, first downs, first downs allowed and third down conversions.
New head coach Brett Gilliland inherits a team that broke 22 school and GSC records during the 2013 season and led the league with nine first-team All-GSC selections and 11 second team all-conference picks.
A record-setting quarterback at UWA himself, Gilliland also returns 2013 GSC Offensive Player of the Year Kyle Caldwell, who was also a regional finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy and was the 2011 GSC offensive freshman of the year.
Caldwell led West Alabama’s offense, which finished the year ranked No. 1 in the GSC in scoring (49.5) and total offense (539.1). Caldwell was tops in the GSC in passing (206.5), passing touchdowns (28), total offense (245.7) and pass efficiency (184.2).
