Tony Pittman was all smiles Friday night as his Demopolis girls cruised to an 83-28 victory over area foe Chilton County High School.

“I love the intensity,” Pittman said. “We came out tonight and played with intensity. We didn’t know what to expect from Chilton County and we came out and played with intensity.”

Pittman’s team was in control from the outset and scarcely slowed down during the blowout victory.

“Saw some smiles tonight we hadn’t seen since the Selma game,” Pittman said of his team.

The DHS head coach has repeatedly emphasized the team’s need to develop its depth.

Friday’s game provided ample opportunity for the Tigers’ bench to do just that as the DHS reserve unit put on an absolute clinic in the fourth quarter, knocking down six shots in a row during one stretch, including two from beyond the arc.

“I was glad to see that,” Pittman said. “They really just followed suit from the starters. They were able to hit some shots from the outside. I was happy to see that from our young kids.”

Demopolis had four players in double figures on the night.

Joshalyn Lawson led the way with 19 points. Demekia Marshall added 15.

Aleshia Arnold finished with 13. Shadijah Moore scored 11 while Valissa Sams and Corneshia Perkins each contributed eight.

Demopolis travels to Newbern today to face Sunshine High School.

“It’ll be a good challenge for our team and our defense,” Pittman said of facing Sunshine High standout Shafontaye Myers. “She puts a lot of pressure on the defense. You’re not going to be able to sit back in zone against a player the caliber of Shafontaye.”
