Demopolis Middle School’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) student organization recently attended its Spring State Conference and State Competition.

Twenty students competed against other middle schools across the state in the events of computer slide show presentation, Web page creation, desktop publishing, spreadsheet application and community service project.

DMS had five competitors win their competition at the state level, and all Demopolis students were finalists. They won three out of the five categories in which they competed.

The state winners were Rachel England and Riley King in the computer slide show division, Jordan Williams in the spreadsheet application division and Morgan Godwin and Madelyn Couch in the community service project division.

The event was held in Birmingham at the BJCC Sheraton Hotel & Conference Center on April 16 and 17. Students attended workshop topics that included making wise decisions in spending money, Internet safety, team-building, learning when to lead and when to follow, steps to take to become a successful entrepreneur, and learning how to invest money properly.

Students observed competitive public speaking events and digital video production events. They also attended a general session that included the guest speaker, Heather Schultz, who spoke about student leadership, believing in yourself and bullying. She motivated and challenged students to examine the choices they make in life.
