Kenny Freeman, the president of the Demopolis High School Quarterback Club and a part-owner of West Alabama Real Estate, was named the 2009 Saint Nicholas in a ceremony at the Demopolis Civic Center on Monday.

Freeman was one of four worthy nominees, which included U.S. Jones Elementary School counselor Carolyn Moore, youth sports volunteer Mike Randall and third-grade teacher Johnnie Scott.

The letter of nomination that the Saint Nicholas committee received for Freeman described him as “hard-working, loyal and reliable. He worked as a volunteer in many Christmas on the River festivals. He paved the way for many fund-raisers, including the DHS Quarterback Club drawdown and the $3,000 gift that was raised for an injured football player from LeFlore Magnet High School,” which Demopolis faced in the 5A state quarterfinals.

Freeman received the traditional robe and hat from 2008 Saint Nicholas Ann Parsons.

“This is truly an honor,” Freeman said. “I really am humbled. I didn’t think I was deserving. What I do, I do for fun. The Quarterback Club is a passion. I love to help people. But, this is just truly an honor.”

The tradition of Saint Nicholas was added to the COTR festivities in 1989.

“They couldn’t have made a wrong choice from any who were nominated,” said Parsons of the 2009 selection.

“As Saint Nicholas, he will take part in the parade. He will also be a guest of honor at several of the programs during Christmas on the River week.

“I enjoyed everything about Christmas on the River and serving as Saint Nicholas last year! I always enjoy Christmas on the River!”

Saint Nicholas nominees must be members of the community who have possessed the Christmas spirit throughout the year and have exhibited it with their generosity and compassion toward children. Demopolis citizens sent in nominees to be considered.
