The Canebrake Players are currently undergoing their annual membership drive.

Fresh off summer blockbuster Ring of Fire, the group is now gearing up for the Spring production of Rumors.

“We had sellout crowds for each performance and even had to add shows to accommodate everyone,” said Laurie Willingham, who will direct Rumors.

The current membership drive seeks to fill roles that would see the group grow in both membership and ideas.

“We want to generate more interest and involvement,” Willingham said. “We would like to brainstorm for new ideas so we can grow…”

Willingham said the group enjoyed record participation and attendance at its annual Haints and Haunts Ghost Tour, which is co-sponsored with the Marengo County Historical Society.

“We incorporated a lot of Demopolis History into this one and although (most event goers said they) loved it, many told us they want to meet more ghosts,” she noted before saying, “Well, get ready. (The) 2012 Haints and Haunts will blow you away.”

Among other items the group tries to undertake is a presence in the annual Christmas on the River parade. This past year, due to a lack of participation and time constants, the group had to sit out.

“I would love to see a committee take that and run with it,” she said. “There are so many things we can do to grow and really generate more interest but it takes time, money and people.”

In an effort to raise the group’s profile, the Players have created a Facebook page. It’s listed as The Canebrake Players. There you will find audition and production dates, children’s workshop dates and photos from past productions and information for all upcoming events.

“As a non-profit organization we thrive only through the dedication and support of our members, and without a strong foundation we would not be able to offer such quality productions,” Willingham said. “Membership does have its privileges! With membership come season tickets.”

Membership packages vary from $30 (Individual with one season ticket) to $750 (Corporate with 16 season tickets.)
