The Demopolis Fire Department will be using a Mobile Fire Trainer from the Alabama Fire College this week to simulate live fire scenarios to advance the training of the firefighters.

The purpose of the Mobile Fire Trainer is to provide fire suppression training at any location while allowing a trained staff member to control the settings and safety elements of the live fire training scenarios.

“This is a good way to simulate what goes on inside a fire,” Demopolis Fire Chief Tommy Tate said. “We can simulate just about any kind of fire with this trailer. It’s a good opportunity for the younger guys who haven’t seen many fires to get that experience.”

The training trailer simulates fire and smoke for a full live fire training experience.

Tate added that training in a controlled setting like the trailer helps because of how many scenarios they can run through in the week they have the unit.

“We can simulate a stove fire, do ladder training, rollover fires and so many things with this,” he said. “This is really great training. This will help us see how the guys do attacking a fire.”

The training will also help the department with its Insurance Service Office rating.

Alabama Fire College currently has two of these training trailers that go across the state to different departments.

Billy Roberts, the Alabama Fire College coordinator for this region, said the training is good to help departments with their training.

“This is a really good training tool,” he said. “The only cost to Demopolis for this will be to refill the propane tanks. This is a taxpayer funded training tool.”
