Postseason basketball tournaments underway for local teams

All seven local high schools will be competing this week in basketball to see if their seasons will continue or not.

The Marengo Academy boys and girls teams will both face Cornerstone Christian School in the Elite Eight of the AISA State Tournament on Wednesday. The girls will play at 3 p.m. and the boys will play at 4:30 p.m. at Huntingdon College in Montgomery.

The Demopolis Lady Tigers, the No. 2 seed in the area, will go up against the Sumter Central Lady Jaguars on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Selma High School. The winner will advance to the area finals, which will earn them a spot in the sub-regionals.

The Demopolis boys team, the No. 4 seed in the area, will face Sumter Central on Friday at 6 p.m. at Sumter Central. Demopolis will need a win in that game to continue their season.

In Class 2A, the Sweet Water girls team will face Southern Choctaw High School on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Choctaw County High, and the boys will face Southern Choctaw on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Southern Choctaw.

Several local teams will be playing against each other for a chance to advance to the sub-regionals. Linden and John Essex’s boys teams will face each other at 6 p.m. Friday at Sunshine High School for a chance to advance. The A.L. Johnson and John Essex girls teams will also play each other for a chance to continue their seasons. They will play Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Akron Community School.

A.L. Johnson’s boys team faced Akron on Tuesday night at Sunshine for a chance to face Sunshine on Friday.

Linden’s girls team will face Sunshine at 6 p.m. Thursday at Akron.

Finally, the Marengo Panthers boys and girls teams will both be playing at St. Luke’s to see if their seasons continue. The boys played J.U. Blacksher on Tuesday, and the girls will play McIntosh on Thursday at 6 p.m.
