Alabama Southern awards scholarships to local students

Dr. Reginald Sykes, president of Alabama Southern Community College, recently announced recipients of scholarships for 2014. To date, the college has awarded more than $2 million in scholarships to this year’s high school seniors within the ASCC community.
The following Marengo County students received scholarships to Alabama Southern:
•Erin James of Sweet Water High School received a Dean’s Scholarship. She is the daughter of Timothy James.
•Robert Norwood of Amelia Love Johnson High School received a Dean’s Scholarship. He is the son of Rose Norwood.
•Whitley Hilderbrand of Sweet Water High School received an Academic Excellence Scholarship. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hilderbrand.
•Tori Dodson of Linden High School received a Leadership Scholarship. She is the daughter of Terrie Dodson.
•Raigan Miller Gates of Sweet Water High School received an Art Scholarship. She is the daughter of Heath and Sher Gates.

The Dean’s Scholarship requires a minimum ACT composite score of 24 and grade point average of 3.3. It is worth $10,000.
The Academic Excellence Scholarship requires an ACT composite score of 21 and a grade point average of 3.0. It is worth $6,000.
The Leadership Scholarship requires a minimum grade point average of 3.0, and students must be a senior class president, SGA president, Distinguished Young Women winner or a yearbook editor. It is worth $1,250 per year for two years.
The Art Scholarship requires a grade point average of 3.0, and students must produce a portfolio of their work. It is a $10,000 scholarship.
