BIRMINGHAM – West Alabama scored 35 runs on 41 hits, including a record-breaking day for Whitney Brown, on the way to a collegiate softball doubleheader sweep of Miles College Wednesday afternoon.

The Tigers won the first game, 15-5, and the took the nightcap, 20-10. West Alabama improved its record to 7-2 with the sweep. Miles fell to 0-4.

Brown, a junior from Fyffe, Ala., went 5-for-5 and drove in 10 runs in the first game. Her five hits included two doubles and triple and two home runs, one her second grand slam of the season. She was 2-for-3 with a homer, her fourth of the year, and two more RBI in the nightcap.

Brown set UWA and Gulf South Conference records for total bases in a game with 15 in the opener. Set now owns the UWA record for RBI in a single game with 10 and tied the school record for hits in a game with five. She was one RBI short of the GSC record for RBI in a single game.

“Whitney was locked in. When they got it around the plate she made them pay,” UWA head coach Will Atkinson said. “We moved her up in the lineup and that didn’t faze her. She gets good pitches to hit and doesn’t miss.

“I am happy with the way we are swinging the bat,” Atkinson said. “Scarlett Wright had a career day in the second game and it got overshadowed by a hitter that is completely locked in and just in a tremendous groove.”

Wright had four hits, including a home run, and drove in five runs in the second game. Morgan Morrison collected four hits and Michal Robertson three in the first game. Tamara Vickers drove in five runs with a pair of hits, while Stephanie Shoup had three doubles and Anna Shartzer homered and had three RBI in the second game.

Sarah Ray (4-1) was the winning pitcher for the Tigers in the first game, striking out four. Jessica Brock (2-1) allowed just two hits and struck out seven to earn the win the nightcap. Amanda Talley (0-1) and Talana Brown (0-2) took the losses for Miles.

The Tigers travel to Tuskegee for a doubleheader on Monday.
