LIVINGSTON – Brittany Weathers scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead West Alabama to a 57-41 Gulf South Conference women’s basketball victory over Christian Brothers Saturday at Pruitt Hall.

Even with Weathers’ fourth double-double of the season and Nikkia Jordan chipping in 17 points, it was the UWA defensive effort, according to head coach Craig Roden, that sealed the Tigers’ third straight win.

“When you hold a Gulf South Conference basketball team to 25 percent from the floor, that’s a good day,” Roden said. “Our post defense was really good. We did a great job of battling in the post.”

The win improved West Alabama to 12-12 overall and 7-9 in GSC play. Christian Brothers is 6-18 and 3-13.

West Alabama held Christian Brothers scoreless for two extended periods in the first half on the way to a 31-21 advantage at the break. The Lady Bucs did not score for the first 6:31 of the game and then went 5:04 without a point late in the first half.

The Lady Bucs rallied early in the second half to cut the UWA lead to four points, but UWA fought off the charge and led the entire game despite shooting just 30 percent from the floor. One key difference for West Alabama was scoring 29 points off 18 CBU turnovers while committing just 10 turnovers.

“This is one of those days where beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” Roden said. “We didn’t shoot it very well, but overall we played pretty well and executed the game plan.”

Brenna Ridgell and Candis Clear led Christian Brothers scoring with 11 points each. April Bonner collected 10 rebounds for the Lady Bucs.

UWA travels to Union on Thursday before closing the regular season at home against North Alabama on Saturday.
