West Alabama softball battled back to beat Young Harris 6-0 in game two of a doubleheader after falling 7-6 in game one at E.D. Rivers Field on Thursday.

West Alabama moved to 18-16 overall, while Young Harris moved to 15-20.

Two YHC singles and one UWA error led to four runs in the bottom of the seventh of game one to give the Mountain Lions the victory.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Whitney Brown, but trailed until the fourth inning. In the fourth, Randa Simpson singled into the infield that brought in one run and tied the game at 2-2. She then added two more runs on a double in the sixth inning.

Jordyn Whiddon belted her fourth homerun of the season in the top of the seventh to extend the Tigers’ lead to 6-3.

Brown, Simpson and Lydia North all ended 2-for-4 at the plate in game one, while Simpson led with three RBI. Six Tigers scored runs.

Sarah Magill led YHC 2-for-4 including a two run home run in the bottom of the first inning to give the Mountain Lions their first lead at 2-1. She ended with two runs.

Katie-Jo Gentry (3-3) entered in the final inning to take the win. She allowed only one hit. Taylor Tucker (1-4) also entered in the last inning, replacing Jessica Brock, to take the loss. Tucker gave up two earned runs on four hits, while Brock struck out six batters through six innings.

The Tiger bats were swinging from the start of game two, scoring all of their runs in the first two innings. UWA totaled 11 hits, while Young Harris had four.

Brown jump started the offense with an RBI single in the top of the first inning. Rebecca Schick followed with a three run home run in the same inning to give Tigers a 4-0 lead. Brown extended the lead to six with a two run homer in the second inning.

Brown’s home run was her ninth of the season, tying her with Shartzer as the teams’ leader. Schick’s was her eighth of the year.

Skylar Davis (4-3) took the win in game two pitching her third complete game of the season and her third shutout. Brittany Henry (4-5) pitched through the first inning allowing four runs to take the loss.

West Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference action in a doubleheader against Christian Brothers on Saturday in Memphis, Tenn. First pitch for game one is set for 2 p.m.
