Demopolis High head football coach Tom Causey concludes a big week today in Tunica, Miss. at the Mid-South installment of the 2009 Nike Coach of the Year Clinic.

“I don’t know it it is so much about my name” Causey said of the invitation he received to speak at the clinic, which also features national championship winning coaches Dennis Erickson of Arizona State, Butch Davis of North Carolina and Urban Meyer of Florida. “But about what we’ve accomplished over the last few years.”

Causey is scheduled to speak this afternoon on the topics of “Spread Offense with Big O-line Splits” and “Option from the Spread Offense.”

The topics are two with which Causey is very familiar. The unusually large splits and the option are staples in Causey’s version of the spread offense.

“It was just something we were looking at to give us better angles,” Causey said of the implementation of the extended offensive line splits that often draw attention from other coaches.

The success Causey and his staff have found with the scheme at Demopolis and 4A Andalusia has garnered the second-year head coach the attention that earned him an invite to speak at the clinic. Still, Causey credits that success to his players.

“They have to believe in it for it to work,” he said.

While preparing his presentations for the clinic, Causey learned earlier this week he had been selected as one of the coaches for the AHSAA’s North-South All-Star Football Game.

“It’s a tremendous honor,” Causey, who will serve as an assistant coach on the South squad, said. “I think it’s a direct result of what our football team accomplished. It’s a great honor to e able to go and coach in an all-star game in what I think is the greatest football state in the country.”

That game is scheduled for July 17 on the campus of Alabama A&M and will serve as part of the annual All-Star Sports Week festivities.
