PD urges caution as theft cases rise

Following a rash of car break-ins in Demopolis, Police Chief Tommie Reese is offering some practical advice: Lock your doors.

Reese said theft activity has picked up, but in each case the auto-owner has left their doors unlocked.

“It’s easy to just open the door,” Reese said. “Most of the time, the best theft deterrent is just locking the door. Breaking the glass makes noise and attracts attention. They’ll just keep going until they find an easier one.”

Reese also noted that the location of the parked vehicles didn’t seem to matter.

“At home, in the drive way in a parking lot,” he said of where the theft reports have come from.

He added that as the holiday season approaches, break-ins will likely be more common around the county.

Reese asked that citizens seeing any suspicious activity to please call the police department 289-3072 or your local law enforcement.
