The rodent problem in the cafeteria of U.S. Jones Elementary School has officially been resolved.

Marengo County Public Health Environmentalist Daniel Wysmulek revisited the facility Thursday after citing it for a critical violation 10 days earlier.

“They did great. The staff there did a great job of fixing issues that could promote insects or rats and things like that,” Wysmulek said. “They plugged up holes. They did everything they needed to do.”

Wysmulek’s routine inspection on Jan. 9 showed evidence of the presence of rodents in the cafeteria. Wysmulek did point out at the time that there was no evidence of the pests in food preparation areas. Still, the item is considered a critical violation and left U.S. Jones with an 89 health score and 10 days to rectify the problem.

“They did a great job of boxing everything up into plastic totes and organizing. Lewis Pest Control did a great job of getting things together and making sure this didn’t happen again,” Wysmulek said. “I can’t say enough good things about them. They really impressed me. I did not see any evidence of rodents. I didn’t see anything that would lead me to believe there were any there. They did a great job of sanitizing everything and doing a deep thorough cleaning.”

The latest inspection left U.S. Jones with a health score of a 95. Demopolis City Schools Superintendent Dr. Al Griffin said he believes that score will be higher at the next inspection as one of the items cited involved an area that had yet to be cleaned following a recent construction, a problem that should not exist during the next quarterly inspection.
