While the national election for president was too close to close to call as of presstime, Marengo County voters did decide on several local seats.
The closest local contest of the evening was for the District 2 County Commission seat where Democrat Jason Windham defeated incumbent Republican Dan England. Windham earned 1,160 votes to England’s 967.
For the District 4 County Commission seat, incumbent Democrat Calvin Martin won re-election over independent candidate Emanuel Gary Jr. Martin had 1,486 votes to Gary’s 521.
In a race for Marengo County Board of Education, District 5, Lynda P. Joiner (D), withstood a write-in vote of 569, with her total off 1,207 votes.
While Alabama was won by presidential candidate Donald Trump, it was a different story in Marengo County where Hillary Clinton edged Trump, 5,607 to 5,224.
The Democrat challenger to longtime Senator Richard Shelby also faired well in the county. Democrat Ron Crumpton edged Shelby 5,410 to 5,285. Shelby was declared the statewide winner.
Other races on the Marengo County ballot that did not have challengers included: 17th Judicial Circuit District Attorney Greg Griggers (7,965 votes), District 3 Marengo County Board of Education Rayvell Smith (1,328 votes), Seventh District Rep. Terri Sewell (7,331 votes), Place 1 Supreme Court Justice Mike Bolin (4,853), Place 2 Supreme Court Justice Kelli Wise (4,804), Place 3 Supreme Court Justice Tom Parker (4,808), Public Service Commission President Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh (4,856), District 5 State Board of Education Ella Bell (6,800),
There were a total of 11,046 ballots cast.
Marengo County voters going straight-ticket went 4,320 Democrat and 1,829 for Republicans.
