Demopolis library to host history programs

The Friends of the Demopolis Public Library are excited to present “Stories of the American Revolution” at noon and “Pirates: The Real Story” at 6 p.m. with historian Jim Phillips on Thursday, May 12, at the library.
Stories of the American Revolution will be the topic at noon for a Lunch and Learn program. Phillips will highlight true and unforgettable stories from the American Revolution and the 13 colonies. Bring your own lunch or call to reserve a lunch plate for $7. The Friends of the Library will provide drinks and dessert.
The public can learn interesting facts about pirates, during the evening program. For instance, there were never any true “pirate chests.” Some pirates retired rich and received government pardons for their sins. This discussion will include photos of pirate weapons and display actual relics from the pirate era.
Attendees will learn there were as many different pirate flags as there were pirates and will discover life aboard a pirate ship was filthy and brutal, but the ill-gotten gains were amazing during “Pirates: The Real Story” on the second floor of the library.
Phillips, who holds a master’s degree in educational media, has produced several educational and historical videos on places in Alabama. The programs are free and sponsored by The Friends of the Demopolis Public Library. For more information contact Demopolis Librarian Morgan Allen at 334-289-1595.
