Spiller Furniture celebrates 70 years

Spiller Furniture is celebrating 70 years in the business this year. The business was begun in 1948 in Tuscaloosa by James E. Spiller Jr.  Spiller began by selling used furniture in a space that was 20 by 75 feet. Under his leadership, the furniture store began to grow and more stores were opened in Tuscaloosa and the surrounding cities.

James Spiller died suddenly in 1982 at the age of 65. James’ son, Mike Spiller, who had been working for the company, took over as president just prior to his father’s untimely death. Mike’s entrepreneurial spirit and drive led the company to expand to 18 stores and Mike and the Spiller Company garnered many awards and honors.

Mike retired in 2012 and his son, Shane Spiller,  became president of the company in 2004 prior to his father’s official retirement.

Under Shane’s leadership, Spiller Furniture changed its name to Spiller Furniture and Mattress to reflect the importance of mattresses and how it can help get a good night’s sleep.

Spiller Furniture was named Retailer of the Year by the North American Home Furnishings Association in 2015.

Shane Spiller’s knowledge and expertise is well recognized in the furniture industry. This distinction has landed him on the cover of several national publications including Retailer Now and Sleep Savvy Magazine.

Spiller Furniture & Mattress has built a reputation for offering in-house credit to tens of thousands of customers. This model has helped grow the business while at the same time, afforded many customers the opportunity to build their credit history.

Spiller Furniture & Mattress’ central office is located on McFarland Boulevard in Northport and is part of an 85,000 square-foot facility that houses a showroom and warehouse.

Spiller Furniture & Mattress employs over 115 people with stores in 14 locations and provides a full line of home furnishings, electronics, and appliances. A new store in West Point, Mississippi opened last month. Spiller Furniture & Mattress has a store located at 307 S. Cedar Ave. in Demopolis.

The success of the business throughout the years is a reflection of its dedicated employees.

Spiller Furniture & Mattress would like to thank its loyal customers who have helped to grow the family business over these past 70 years.
