Sumter County BOE files suit against UWA, charter school

The University of West Alabama is facing a lawsuit filed by the Sumter County Board of Education related to the university’s plans to use the former Livingston High School building for its charter school.

According to published reports, the lawsuit states that using the old LHS building for the new University Charter School violates a 2011 sales agreement between UWA and the Sumter County BOE. Since the sell in 2011, the building has been used as the UWA College of Education.

The Sumter County BOE requested an immediate restraining order to block the charter school from using the facility until a hearing is held.

The lawsuit accuses UWA of violating a 2011 sales agreement, stating that the university could not use the facility for a school that was not under the control of the county school board.

University Charter School is scheduled to open this fall with classes for pre-kindergarten through eighth grades.
